Xavi rubbishes Ronaldo's Ballon d'Or bid: He wouldn't even be in my top three

Xavi has questioned Cristiano Ronaldo's status as the favourite to win the Ballon d'Or, pointing out the Portugal star "did not do much at the World Cup" and revealing he would not even have the Real Madrid ace in his top three. "He didn't do much in the World Cup, and in a World Cup year, the season is defined by that," the former Spain international said of Ronaldo in an interview with Sport. However, Barcelona icon Xavi does not believe the 29-year-old would be worthy winner after a Ronaldo-led Portugal suffered dismal first-round elimination in Brazil, while Ballon d'Or rivals Manuel Neuer and Lionel Messi both featured in the final, for Germany and Argentina, respectively. The attacker won the award for 2013 and is widely expected to retain his title after a year in which he fired Los Blancos to Champions League glory and played a key role in the Spanish side's remarkable run of 23 straight victories in all competitions.

Messi 'obviously' not joining Chelsea, says Mourinho

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho claims rumours linking Barcelona's Lionel Messi with a move to Stamford Bridge are "obviously" false. The Portuguese insists that the Blues will not be signing the Barcelona superstar, despite his recent revelation that he may not finish his career at the Camp Nou. Messi sparked the rumour mill into overdrive recently when he appeared to suggest that he might not finish his career at Camp Nou. But Mourinho, who went up against Messi several times during his time as Real Madrid coach, is adamant that such stories are falsified. Mourinho told reporters on Friday: "My reaction is that the media world changed so much that the football world also changed so much. Premier League leaders Chelsea were subsequently identified as a possible destination for the Argentine superstar, while Manchester City is also monitoring his situation.

Carlo Ancelotti: Suarez won't ruin Real Madrid plans, says Ancelotti

Ancelotti is not concerned that last season's Premier League top goalscorer will disrupt his own plans unduly at Santiago Bernabeu. Carlo Ancelotti does not believe Barcelona's wild card option Luis Suarez will ruin Real Madrid's chances of winning El Clasico on Saturday. Ancelotti, who is in his second year as Real Madrid boss, thinks the Catalunya club have been boosted by Luis Enrique's appointment this summer and highlighted Lionel Messi and Neymar as dangermen. "Barca seems to me to be a more motivated side - they have a new coach and new players," he continued. "Defensively, they're very solid. "If Luis Suarez plays tomorrow or not, it won't change our plans," the Italian coach told reporters on Friday. "If he does play, it's not a problem for us.

Keshi has lost it – Victor Ikpeba

The Super Eagles, reigning African champions, could miss out on defending their title in Morocco if they fail to win both matches after starting on a wrong footing last month. The former African player of the year has criticized the Big Boss for his selection ahead of the crunch qualifiers against Sudan this month. Former Nigeria forward Victor Ikpeba has lashed out at coach Stephen Keshi over his decision to call up ‘rookies’ for the must-win pair of 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sudan this month. Nigeria lost 3-2 to Congo in Calabar before pulling a listless goalless draw in Cape Town against South Africa and sit third on the table with a single point out of a possible six.

Messi to face trial over tax evasion claim

The Barcelona superstar had claimed he was not aware of the financial dealings of his father and agent Jorge, with the pair accused of defrauding the tax authorities of €4.1 million between 2006 and 2009. Lionel Messi is to go on trial on a charge of tax evasion after a magistrate on Friday dismissed his appeal against being named in the case. It is alleged that Messi's image rights were sold by Jorge - who assumed full responsibility when the case began - using companies in countries like Belize and Uruguay to avoid Spanish tax obligations. The player and his father paid just over €5m - the alleged unpaid tax plus interest - to authorities last year as a corrective payment and it had looked as if the case would be closed but the state has opted to pursue the pair. Messi has protested his innocence throughout and insisted he is not guilty of any wrongdoing.

Where would the Blame Go: Keshi or the Glass House?

Boss Keshi
Against the Congolese and the South Africans, The Super Eagles of Nigeria were, as usual, predictable, useless at set pieces, opted for kick-and-follow football, and could barely string meaningful passes together. Is it safe to say that Stephen Keshi has reached his peak with the national team and that it’s time for fresh ideas in the dressing room?. The Super Eagles managed a well-deserved 3-2 loss in Calabar and an undeserved point gained against Bafana Bafana of South Africa, who can only blame their poor finishing and inexperience for failing to take all three. While the South Africans lacked composure and clinical finishing, Claude Le Roy's Congo had Thievy Bifouma to rely on, although Ogenyi Onazi, Kenneth Omeruo and Godfrey Oboabona were all complicit in making the former West Bromwich Albion loanee look like Thierry Henry. It look like "We had a good team on paper; unfortunately, the game was played on grass."
Or is it the administrative disaster at the Glass house that is impacting performances on the pitch?
There's no perfect answer to either question, but two things are clear.
1. Keshi’s team has not improved since their Afcon triumph.
2. You cannot expert cohesion in a football house that is in disarry
3. Aminu Maigari and Chris Giwa are not in charge of the Super Eagles’ dressing room.

Congo Vs Nigeria another record to be broken in Cape Town

For 33 long years the West African giants have not lost a competitive match on their own patch. 1981 was the last home defeat, invincibility ever since….few of the continent’s nations could have made claims greater than that…until now. Records are there to be broken, or so they say, but the current Nigeria squad will surely be devastated that the Super Eagles’ proud history of resilience at home fell on their watch. The Republic of Congo strode into town behind Claude Le Roy, a wily, savvy veteran who knows how to forge resilient, yet offensive-minded teams. He hasn’t always succeeded, but he did on Saturday, dethroning the African champions with unforgettable lesson.

The 1996 Afcon winners now hope to win their first ever competitive game against the Super Eagles on Wednesday at the Cape Town Stadium. “We just need to keep our feet grounded and the rest will follow. The players know what it means to represent one’s country; they know that behind their backs that they are carrying the hopes of 52 million people," Vilakazi said. The PSL player of the season scored twice in Omdurman to set Shakes Mashaba on a good spell in his first game in charge of Bafana Bafana.

What does the future hold for Mikel at Chelsea?

Chelsea got their Premier League campaign off to a flying start with a comfortable 3-1 away win over newly-promoted side Burnley on Monday. The Portuguese handed debuts to new recruits, Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas, and both proved to be key figures as Burnley were taken apart. In terms of personnel and performance, it was a new-look Chelsea, one that Jose Mourinho likes very much. However, with the team packed with so much power and flair, where exactly does John Obi Mikel fit in the revolutionised Stamford Bridge outfit? As Mourinho seeks perfection, does he have a place for the Nigerian, even if he is one of his long-serving lieutenants?

NFF Ready To Pay Keshi N7m Monthly Salary

According to a report published by AfricanFootball.com, a top official of the NFF informed that the new contract is most likely to be made public next week pending Keshi’s acceptance of the offer. It would be recalled that the former Super Eagles captain earned five million naira monthly before his initial contract expired after the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. (See Enyeama's Goal 50 entry).  Former Nigeria goalkeeper Peter Rufai has praised the inclusion of Vincent Enyeama in the Goal 50 announced on Monday. Cristiano Ronaldo displaying his Goal 50 winnerthe in history

Ronaldo No One
While infamously declaring his preference for Lionel Messi over Cristiano Ronaldo last year, Sepp Blatter displayed a surprising level of insight when he mused that the Barcelona No.10 is “a good boy ... and that's what makes him so popular.” The Fifa president unwittingly underlined that while the Portuguese may be an advertisers' dream, he has long since lost the Public Relations battle in the war for the title of the greatest player of the 21st century. In the eyes of his critics, Ronaldo's greatest crime appears to be that he is not Lionel Messi. The suggestion that the Madeira native is lacking something seems particularly ludicrous after a season in which he scored 51 goals, 11 of which came either via his head or his ‘weaker’ left foot, and ended with him placing a Champions League winners’ medal in his trophy cabinet alongside the Ballon d’Or for 2013.

Reclined on a lounge chair close to the still lake that borders the Brasilia Palace Hotel, he had one last thing on his mind - how to return home with the remaining crop of players in his care. 'Legend' Drogba upstaged as Eto'o eases Chelsea into Champions League quarter-finals

Prior to making his long-awaited return to Stamford Bridge, Didier Drogba admitted he had not decided whether he would celebrate scoring against Chelsea. In his pre-match press conference, Jose Mourinho refused to rule out the possibility of Drogba coming back to Stamford Bridge as a player when he becomes a free agent again this summer. But then Mourinho also said he did not believe this match would be over by half-time. Less than four minutes after the referee had blown his whistle it became abundantly clear just why Mourinho had identified Galatasaray as his preferred opponents in the Champions League round of 16. And for all the sentimental talk of the past few days, it had little to do with Drogba.
