Atletico Madrid dominate La Liga awards with Barcelona and Real Madrid among winners

The Champions League runners-up were the big winners during the star-studded ceremony in Valencia, winning five of the nine categories. Star forward Antoine Griezmann was named as Best Player of the season and picked up the Fans' Five Star Player award, while Atleti manager Diego Simeone won the Best Coach category. Diego Godin ended Sergio Ramos' dominance as Best Defender to pick up the award after the Real Madrid captain had won in each of the last four years. Jan Oblak was also named as Best Goalkeeper and is the second time an Atleti stopper has taken home the award after Thibaut Courtois in the 2012/13 season.
Barcelona took two of the remaining categories, with Lionel Messi named as Best Striker - despite scoring fewer goals than Luis Suarez and Cristiano Ronaldo last season - but his Barca team-mate did pick up the La Liga World Player accolade. Real Madrid were victorious in the Best Midfielder category as Luka Modric was crowned the winner, while Marco Asensio - who spent last season on loan at Espanyol - was named as Best Newcomer. The 2015/16 campaign saw Barcelona edge Real Madrid to the title - ending up with 91 points to their El Clasico rivals' 90 - with Atletico Madrid finishing third with 88 points. It was also an all-Madrid Champions League final as Los Blancos edged Atleti in a penalty shootout to lift their 11th European title. Atletico Madrid dominated the 2015/16 La Liga awards on Monday evening with Barcelona and Real Madrid also among the victors.
